The advantage of our data is that we observe whether the product was marketed as well as the share of quantity eroded by between patent competition. This is different from renewal literature for which this is unobservable.

In this study, eszopiclone compared with placebo significantly improved sleep latency, wake time after sleep onset, number of awakenings, number of nights awakened per week, total sleep time, and quality of sleep. Additionally, tolerance to eszopiclone did not develop during the study.15 In clinical studies, eszopiclone appears to be safe. The most commonly reported adverse effect was bitter taste. Ramelteon Rozerem ; , a selective melatonin agonist for insomnia, has been recently approved by the FDA. It is not a benzodiazepine or a controlled substance. Like eszopiclone it is not limited to short-term use. The recommended dose is 8 mg taken 30 minutes before bedtime. Absorption of ramelteon is delayed by food.22 Another non-benzodiazepine agent, not yet approved by the FDA, is indiplon. Indiplon is a GABA receptor agonist which is short-acting. Benzodiazepines BZDs ; are also commonly prescribed for management of insomnia. Trial data indicates that when compared with placebo, BZDs decreased sleep latency and increased sleep duration.16 Side effects of daytime sedation, memory problems, and falls may limit utility in some populations, especially the elderly. There are also concerns that BZDs may limit deep sleep. Commonly studied BZDs for insomnia include flurazepam Dalmane ; and temazepam Restoril ; . Temazepam is generally the best recommendation as flurazepam has a long half life. Antidepressants may also be used to promote sleep, especially in patients who also have concurrent depression or psychological disorders.
